French Energy Market Opening

End of regulated electricity and gas pricesThe French energy market began opening gradually since the outset of 2000 for both electricity and natural gas, becoming fully open after 1 July 2007. After this date, all consumers may freely choose their energy supplier at their own discretion and opt for a market offer.

The opening of the energy markets will reach another significant stage on 31 December 2015, as certain regulated sales tariffs will come to an end:

  • End of regulated tariffs for natural gas sales for non-residential sites, which have a yearly consumption rate of over 30,000 kWh/year.
  • End of regulated tariffs for electricity sales for sites having a subscribed power capacity strictly greater than 36 kVA (corresponding to green and yellow tariffs).

If you are part of at least one site, you should have received a letter from the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Energy, Economy and Finances informing you of the phasing out of these regulated tariffs. A copy of these letters is available here for electricity [PDF] (*) and natural gas [PDF] (*).

In particular, on 31 December 2015, all sites no longer capable of benefitting from the regulated sales tariff, whether electricity or natural gas, must have subscribed to a market offer with the supplier of their choice.
